Frequently Asked Questions
Do you only work with artists or certain sizes? Do you work with other industries?
Although Unicorn Accounting is specifically geared towards artists, we are able to help file any individual or US business file taxes. We do not work with anyone creating content involving Generative AI. There is no minimum size or revenue that you have to meet in order to utilize Unicorn Accounting!
Do you accept payment plans?
Yes! Each payment plan is unique, and we will work with you to figure out something that works for you. In addition, we offer limited free file slots for taxpayers experiencing financial hardship. If you would like to help support our free file program by paying for another artist's return, please reach out!
Can you help me set up a payment plan with the federal/state/local government?
Yes! There are some limitations on the maximum tax liability that lets you be eligible for a payment plan, but in general I can facilitate the setup of a payment plan for you. Each state has different rules, so while I can help set up a payment plan for your federal taxes, state and local tax payment plans are on a case-by-case basis.

How our tax filing works
Initial Contact
The first step is always the same: meeting you! Whether it be through email, discord, at a convention, or something else, we'll always get to know each other first to make sure we're a good fit for each other.
Contract
After we've ironed out what exactly you're looking for help with and if Unicorn Accounting is the right fit with you, we'll send over a copy of our contract for you to look over and sign. If you have any questions, we're always more than happy to discuss.
Files
After we have a signed contract, you'll receive a Dropbox link via email to a folder with your name! This folder will have a copy of the signed contract and an intake form that asks for basic information about you and lists all the forms and information needed to file your taxes. All files can be dropped straight into this Dropbox folder!
Tax Prep
After all your files have been uploaded to the Dropbox folder, work will begin on your taxes! During this time, you may receive some extra questions from Sydney, usually to determine if there's any extra credits that you qualify for.
Review and Filing
Once a first pass of your tax return is completed, an initial copy will be uploaded to your Dropbox folder. After you review this copy, a form will be sent over to you to ensure that you consent to the filing and understand any taxes due.

Unicorn Accounting is intended for artists first and foremost. Our mission is to help you feel in control of your finances, and confident in the knowledge that you're doing everything right. You shouldn't have to explain artist alley to your accountant; work with someone who actually understands what you do for a living!
About Sydney
Sydney (her/his) is the full-time finance director at Dual Wield Studio and is passionate about accounting, art, and fandom! Unicorn Accounting started as a small business for a few artist friends, but has now grown to encompass a wide range of clients and the ability to practice in all fifty states.Sydney is an Enrolled Agent that is certified to practice before the IRS on all tax matters. This means that not only can Unicorn Accounting file your taxes, we can also help settle disputes and audits, speak to the IRS on your behalf, and represent you if the need arises.Speaking on a more personal level, I love what I do, and I want to take the fear out of accounting and tax season. Artists deserve peace of mind when it comes to tax season, and that's what I aim to do! Most of my friends are artists, and I help my roommate run a small shop and we occasionally table at conventions, so I'm very familiar with the kinds of work most of my clients do!
